After two days of delay due to poor weather, the first one-day long-distance race of the season finally took place from Gien (510 km). W. & F. Ebben entered 10 pigeons, and Combination Ebben sent 9.
Although forecasts predicted high speeds, a stronger-than-expected westerly wind kept velocities lower — a challenge that suited our birds just fine.
At 12:29 PM, two brothers arrived together at the loft of Willy Ebben — an impressive sight. For a long time, they looked set to take 1st and 2nd NPO. In the end, we placed 2nd and 8th overall against 5,529 pigeons. We narrowly missed the victory on decimals, and the five birds that came in between ours finished 3rd through 7th — an incredibly tight race. Still, our pigeons secured 1st and 2nd in Region South, with the winner finishing nearly 3 minutes ahead of the 3rd-place bird from Lotte Eijerkamp — a significant lead at this level.

NL23-9147733 "Siemke", a full brother, arrived simultaneously but clocked in 17 seconds later and won among others 1st Etroeungt 2,567 pigeons, 2nd Gien 2,759 pigeons, 17th Chimay 3,363 pigeons, 8th Morlincourt 1,553 pigeons, 23rd Reims 3,456 pigeons, and so on. Click here for the pedigree.
Even more remarkable: both of these top pigeons were bred from the same pairing.
Sire: Odar, a direct cock from G. & S. Verkerk, whose offspring have produced multiple top results in our loft among others 1st Melun 7,291 pigeons, 1st Etroeungt 2,567 pigeons, 1st Gien 2,759 pigeons, 1st Bierges 2,370 pigeons, 1st Etroeungt 2,344 pigeons, and so on.
Dam: A tightly inbred hen to our iconic foundation hen Roosje. This hen is not just from a strong line — she herself is a topbreeder and mother to 1st Provincial Roye 9,558 pigeons, 1st Etroeungt 2,567 pigeons, 1st Gien 2,759 pigeons, 1st Etroeungt 2,344 pigeons, and so on.
1 – 2 – 38 – 49 – 358 – 644 (6/10)
A top performance, resulting in 8th place in the Grootmeester ranking.
29 – 51 – 289 – 290 – 482 – 719 (6/9)
A consistent team effort, earning 12th place in the Grootmeester ranking.

All focus now goes to recovery and preparation. This Thursday, our day-fond team will be basketed again for the 4th Middle-Distance race of the season. With the form shown in Gien, we look forward to what lies ahead.
